Published Date: Not specified
CVE: CVE-2026-20321
Advisory Summary
đź“… October 7, 2026
🧩 🔔 Cisco APIC API Command Injection (Authenticated RCE as root)
⚠️ What happened
Cisco disclosed a vulnerability in the web-based management API of Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary OS commands with root privileges on the affected device.
- Requires valid administrative credentials (i.e., attacker must already be authenticated).
- Root cause is insufficient input validation of user-controlled command arguments sent via the management API.
- A successful attack enables command execution at root level on the underlying operating system.
- Impact type: Command Injection → Remote Code Execution
- Privileges: root
- Overall rating: Medium
- ✅ Apply Cisco’s released software updates for affected APIC versions.
- 🚫 No workaround is provided for this issue—patching is the primary control.
- Ensure admin credentials are strongly protected (MFA, strong password policies, limited admin accounts).
- Audit for unusual API management logins and command patterns.
- Restrict APIC management/API access to trusted networks (VPN/bastion), not broad routable exposure.
- Re-run configuration/security hardening baselines after upgrade.
- Monitor for lingering indicators of compromise (e.g., unexpected processes, persistence changes).
