⬛ 🚨 Cisco Secure Email Gateway — Critical Arbitrary File Write (AMP)
Cisco disclosed a Critical vulnerability in the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) feature of Cisco Secure Email Gateway (ESA). A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit a crafted email attachment to cause arbitrary file writes on the underlying OS, potentially escalating to command execution with root privileges.
- Root cause: Improper handling of email attachments when the file reputation service is enabled.
- Attack path: Send a specially crafted attachment through an affected ESA device.
- Impact: Write arbitrary files on the OS; in successful cases, execute commands as root.
- âś… Patches released by Cisco to address the vulnerability.
- ❌ No workaround available—mitigation should rely on upgrading to fixed software as the primary path.
🔎 What market/IT teams should do now
1. Identify affected ESA deployments (including configurations where file reputation service is enabled).
2. Prioritize patching immediately given the Critical rating and root-level potential.
3. Review email attachment handling policies as a compensating control while patching (e.g., tighten attachment controls / reputation settings where feasible).
4. Validate detection coverage for unexpected file write / process execution patterns following inbound attachment events.
