CVE: CVE-2026-20079
Advisory Summary
📌 🔒 Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) Auth Bypass — Root Access Risk (CVE-2026-20079 | Critical)
⚠️ What happened?
Cisco disclosed a Critical vulnerability in the web interface of Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) software. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can bypass authentication and execute script files on the affected device, resulting in root access on the underlying operating system.
🧩 Root cause (why it matters)
The issue stems from an improper system process created at boot time, which can be abused after the attacker sends crafted HTTP requests to the FMC web interface.
- Attacker targets the FMC web management interface
- Sends crafted HTTP requests
- Gains the ability to run scripts/commands
- Achieves root-level compromise
- Full device takeover (OS root)
- Potential follow-on actions: configuration tampering, persistence, lateral movement, and credential/traffic interception depending on network placement
🛡️ Exposure reduction
Cisco notes that if the FMC management interface does not have public internet access, the attack surface is reduced—but the device is still at risk from any reachable source (e.g., internal networks, VPN, peered management segments).
- Cisco has released software updates to address the vulnerability.
- No workarounds are provided.
📣 Action for market professionals (recommended now)
1. Inventory all deployed Cisco Secure Firewall FMC instances (including HA pairs and management zones).
2. Prioritize patching immediately per Cisco’s affected/version guidance (and validate upgrade sequencing to avoid downtime surprises).
3. Enforce network controls: restrict FMC management access to trusted admin hosts; block broad reachability at L3/L4; tighten VPN/zero-trust policies.
4. Hunt for indicators around unusual unauthenticated HTTP request patterns and any evidence of unauthorized script execution.
