Advisory Summary
📌 Cisco BroadWorks CommPilot: Authorization Bypass in Web Management (CVE-2026-76438)
⚠️ What happened?
Cisco disclosed a vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco BroadWorks CommPilot Application Software. An attacker who is authenticated (but with low privileges) may be able to bypass authorization controls.
- Missing authorization checks on specific management actions/pages.
- A crafted HTTP request could allow the attacker to alter configurations on select pages within the affected management interface.
- If an attacker already has valid access (low-privilege account/session), they can attempt a crafted HTTP request to reach actions they shouldn’t be able to perform.
- Software updates are available and address the issue.
- No workarounds are provided.
- Primary risk is post-auth privilege misuse: breaches don’t need full admin—only low-privilege access plus knowledge of the exposed management endpoints/parameters.
- This can translate into configuration tampering, potentially affecting service behavior, security posture, or integrations depending on what the “select pages” cover in your deployment.
âś… Actionable guidance for IT / Data Center / Service Providers
1. Identify affected CommPilot versions from your asset inventory and CISCO release guidance.
2. Prioritize patching via the released software updates (no workaround exists).
3. Validate access controls: review role assignments for CommPilot users and minimize low-privilege accounts with web management access.
4. Harden management exposure: ensure the management interface is not broadly reachable (restrict by IP/VPN/segmentation where applicable).
5. Monitor for suspicious HTTP management activity (e.g., unusual endpoints, configuration-change attempts, repeated crafted requests).
