Advisory Summary
📅 October 21, 2026
⬛ ⚠️ Cisco Expressway Series: Critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) Risk
Cisco has disclosed a Critical vulnerability affecting Cisco Expressway Series (both Expressway-C and Expressway-E). An attacker with network access and no authentication can exploit the device’s database service to execute arbitrary operating system commands as root.
- The flaw is caused by persistent cookies enabling an attacker to reuse or leverage session artifacts.
- When TLS Verify Mode = Enabled for clustering, Cisco indicates there is insufficient validation of client certificates, meaning certificates may not be validated as expected.
- With cookie possession, an attacker can connect to the database service and trigger specific RPC commands to gain root-level OS command execution.
- Impact: Full system compromise via root command execution
- Exposure: Remote attacker with network access to the Expressway device
- Conditions: No authentication required (key driver of severity)
- No workarounds are available for this vulnerability.
- Cisco has released software updates that address it—patching is the primary (and expected) remediation.
🔐 Actionable market guidance (what to do now)
1. Identify affected Expressway-C/Expressway-E deployments and their software versions immediately.
2. Prioritize patching to the Cisco fixed releases as part of your next urgent change window.
3. Review network exposure: restrict management and database-related reachability to trusted networks only (zero-trust / allowlisting where possible).
4. Validate clustering/TLS configuration: ensure certificate verification behavior aligns with Cisco guidance and internal security baselines.
5. Hunt for indicators: look for unusual RPC/database service activity and root-level command patterns around the time of any suspicious sessions.
