Advisory Summary
π π π οΈ Fabric API Authentication bypass (FortiSandbox / FortiSandbox Cloud)
β οΈ π¨ What happened
Fortinet reports a vulnerability involving a hard-coded cryptographic key (CWE-321) in FortiSandbox and FortiSandbox Cloud API. Under certain conditions, an unauthenticated attacker may be able to access some API endpoints by sending specially crafted HTTP requests.
- CVSSv3: 4.9 (moderate)
- Core risk: endpoint exposure / improper access control
- Threat analysis integrity (access to analysis workflows or metadata)
- Monitoring/telemetry boundaries
- Segmentation assumptions in API-facing deployments (especially in internet-facing or mis-scoped network zones)
- FortiSandbox API
- FortiSandbox Cloud API
- Confirm APIs are not publicly reachable unless explicitly required
- Enforce IP allowlisting / reverse proxy access controls where feasible
- Look for requests that succeed without auth
- Monitor logs for unusual HTTP request shapes targeting API routes
- Rate limiting and WAF policies on API endpoints
- Strict API gateway authentication/authorization enforcement (where applicable)
π§· Market / operational risk note
For organizations standardizing on FortiSandbox as part of a broader security βfabric,β this kind of issue can propagate into trust-chain concerns. Treat sandbox API controls as high-value access surfaces.
